National Italian American Foundation ‘Special Achievements in Business Award’
Stefano Pessina was awarded the ‘Special Achievements Award in Business’ by the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF), for excellence and exemplary achievements in the healthcare industry. The NIAF is a non-profit organization founded in 1975, which hosts its annual awards event to recognize eminent Italian and Italian-American personalities who have distinguished themselves in their professional role.
The Executives’ Club of Chicago ‘International Executive of the Year’
The annual award from the Executives’ Club of Chicago, a prestigious executive membership organization, was given to Stefano Pessina in recognition of his leadership of Walgreens Boots Alliance as an integrated enterprise and his lifelong focus on long-term strategic growth and value creation.
Chain Drug Review ‘Retailer of the Year’
US chain drugstore industry publication Chain Drug Review named Stefano Pessina its 2015 ‘Retailer of the Year’, an award he shares with the Rite Aid Management team.
The Clarity ‘Retail Leader of the Year’
Retail Week Awards – Stefano Pessina was named ‘Retail Leader of the Year’ for 2015, which makes it the second year he has won this award from the UK trade magazine.
Grande ufficiale dell'Ordine della stella d'Italia
The Italian ambassador in Monaco Antonio Morabito awarded the honour of ‘Grande ufficiale dell'Ordine della stella d'Italia’ to Stefano Pessina. This is the second highest civilian honour of the Republic of Italy, and it is given to those who have acquired special merits in the promotion of friendly relations and cooperation between Italy and the other countries and the promotion of ties with Italy.
Chain Drug Review ‘Retailer of the Year’
US chain drugstore industry publication Chain Drug Review named Stefano Pessina its 2012 ‘Retailer of the Year’, an award he shares with Greg Wasson (President and CEO, Walgreens).
Honorary Doctorate in science
The University of Nottingham awarded Stefano Pessina an honorary doctorate in science. He received the accolade from Sir Andrew Witty (CEO of GlaxoSmithKline) who was appointed as the university’s new Chancellor at the same ceremony. Sir Andrew’s first act as Chancellor was to award Stefano his degree.

Premio ASIS ‘Innovare per crescere’
Awarded the Premio ASIS (Pisa, Italy) ‘Innovare per crescere’ (‘Innovate to Grow’) – an award given to mark his entrepreneurial success around the world, his milestones in the healthcare industry and his contribution to improvement in pharmaceutical distribution in Europe.
Honorary Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree
Awarded Honorary Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree from Nottingham Business School, part of Nottingham Trent University, UK.
Alkemeon International Prize
Awarded the Alkemeon International Prize (Rome, Italy), an award given by the National Centre for Research (CNR) and European Brain Research Institute (EBRI) in recognition of Stefano’s contributions to the global evolution of pharmaceutical distribution.
Chain Drug Review ‘Global Retailer of the Year’
US chain drugstore industry publication Chain Drug Review named Alliance Boots its 2009 ‘Retailer of the Year’, an award Stefano Pessina collected together with Ornella Barra.
Honorary Doctor of Science Degree
Awarded Honorary degree of Doctor of Science from the University of Wales, Cardiff (now University of Cardiff).
Awarded to Stefano Pessina by the Minister for Labour, Health and Social Policies, Senator Maurizio Sacconi, this bi-annual award is conferred a British and an Italian personality who have contributed in a significant manner to the enhancement of the economic and industrial ties between the two countries. Stefano Pessina was the Italian recipient alongside British Andrew Witty, then CEO of GlaxoSmithKline.
William L. Ford International Award
Awarded by the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Wholesalers (IFPW) and now called ‘International Leadership Award’, this recognition celebrated the leadership and vision demonstrated by Stefano Pessina to the benefit of the healthcare sector and of pharmaceutical wholesaling and distribution.
